The University of Vermont is hiring a Chairperson for the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics (CDAE). We are an exceptionally collegial department with the most majors of any department on campus. We offer several courses in ecological economics, and our graduate programs attract many ecological economists. Nearly half the students in our new PhD program in Sustainable Development Policy, Economics, and Governance are explicitly studying ecological economics. CDAE hosts the Ecological Economics Network Strategy Center of the Leadership for the Ecozoic Initiative (l4ecozoic.org), which funds many of our PhD students. Hiring an ecological economist as chair would provide a major boost for this initiative and likely attract more funding. CDAE has been actively discussing the creation of the first MS degree in Ecological Economics in the US, though we are awaiting the hiring of a new chair before we move forward. In short, an energetic ecological economist with the right background could help transform CDAE into North America’s pre-eminent program in ecological economics.
