This research project proposes to analyse the interactions of Earth and financial systems through the notion of tipping points within the context of global sustainability. While negative Earth system tipping points (ESTPs) are well documented by existing research, and their potential to trigger socioeconomic collapses is increasingly understood, positive tipping points (PTPs) are more nascent. PTPs may accelerate beneficial change and have recently been introduced as a potential solution to mitigate existential climate risks and foster sustainability. However, the research articulating ESTPs and PTPs concerning the financial system remains limited. The proposed PhD project aims to address this gap by conducting a thorough transdisciplinary literature synthesis, developing conceptual foundations of what Earth-Finance system tipping points could be, and applying such an analytical/modelling framework to empirical or theoretical questions connecting finance and ESTPs.

Dr. Hugues CHENET will supervise this transdisciplinary project. The selected candidate will join the Management & Society faculty department at IÉSEG (click here for more information). Collaborations are expected with researchers from other universities and research programmes (e.g. UCL-ISR, Global Tipping Points).
